Empowering Nurses through Autonomic Nursing

The Society for Autonomic Nursing (SAN) was founded by a group of nurses in Adelaide, Australia, who recognized the need for greater connection and support for clinicians working with people affected by autonomic and related disorders. The first meeting was held in 2025, and the constitution was formally approved in June 2025.

While SAN began in Australia, our focus has been international from the outset. Nurses and health professionals from Europe, North America, and other regions now participate in our meetings and collaborative work. Our aim is to bring together clinicians committed to empowering nurses and enhancing nursing practice in autonomic disorders, ultimately transforming care and improving the outcomes for individuals living with autonomic dysfunction.

SAN provides a place for the nursing community to connect, share knowledge, and work together on practical improvements in clinical care, research translation, education, and service development. We exist to support professional development in nursing for those working in this evolving field and to strengthen consistency and quality across different care settings.

Membership

Membership of the Society for Autonomic Nursing (SAN) is open to nurses, student nurses, and health professionals who are passionate about empowering nurses and advancing nursing practice in autonomic disorders. Membership runs annually from October to October, with a nominal fee to cover essential administrative costs and support SAN’s activities, which are vital for the nursing community.

SAN meets virtually two to three times per year, making participation accessible for members across Australia, Europe, North America, and other regions. Between meetings, members collaborate on shared priorities, including research translation, collaborative publications, education, model-of-care development, and quality improvement, all aimed at transforming care and enhancing professional development in nursing.

By joining, members gain access to a collegial, supportive network and a practical way to contribute to the advancement of autonomic nursing through connection, shared learning, and collective work.
